Iyengar Yoga

What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient Vedic practice, which is aimed at helping mankind understand who they truly are, how to live in balance and harmony with nature, and help them achieve the highest goal of life - Moksha/Mukti (Salvation). It is a combination on Physical exercises, known as Asanas, Breathing practices known as Pranayama and Meditation. Yoga also teaches us how to live in a righteous manner amongst each other. The main aim of Yoga is Self-Realization. We are taught how to eradicate suffering (karma) so as to attain liberation from the cycle of rebirth.

How does Yoga work?

Yoga is a way of living. Though it is primarily focused on Asana, or the physical aspect in the West, the traditional practice of Yoga is far more holistic and healing in nature. Yoga Asanas prepare the body for deep and focused concentration during meditation. With an unfit body, it becomes nearly impossible to still the mind. Once perfection of the body is achieved, one's focus in Yoga is on reflecting upon the conditioning of the mind. It is here that karma is stored and carried from birth to birth. The aim of Yoga is to help us break the bondage of karma, and achieve liberation, by understanding who we truly are, and where we are headed.

How can I benefit from Yoga?

Yoga, if practiced in its truest form, will help you discover that there is much more than living a boring life. You will learn how to control the body, mind and senses, and thereby free yourself from attachment.

The yogic practice is meant for everyone to understand who they are, who their creator is, and where they are meant to go in life. At the same time, Yoga helps you enjoy a full and bountiful life, whilst understanding that everything is really an illusion, and that we must not have attachment to material possessions, experiences, or people. Yoga is truly the science of liberation.
