What causes Low Libido (Shukra Kshaya) & how to fix it naturally

Low libido, or a decreased interest in sexual activity, can have many potential causes, including physical, emotional, and psychological factors. In Ayurveda, low libido is often thought to be caused by an imbalance of the doshas, or energies that govern various bodily functions.

Libido, or sexual desire, is a normal and healthy part of being human. However, what is considered a "healthy" libido can vary widely from person to person and can be influenced by a variety of factors, including age, hormonal changes, relationship status, and overall health and well-being.

In general, it is considered normal for a person's libido to fluctuate over time and for there to be variations in how often a person wants to engage in sexual activity. Some people may have a high libido and want to have sex frequently, while others may have a low libido and be less interested in sexual activity. There is no one-size-fits-all definition of a "healthy" libido, and what is normal for one person may not be normal for another.

There is some research suggesting that men may have a slightly higher libido than women on average, but this is not true for all men and women. In fact, a number of studies have found that there is a wide range of variation in libido among both men and women and that there is no significant difference between the sexes in terms of average libido.

Some Causes of Low Libido

According to Ayurveda, low libido or shukra kshaya (a term that refers to a decrease in the production of shukra, or reproductive fluids) can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • Physical factors: Physical conditions such as poor nutrition, illness, or certain medications can contribute to low libido.

  • Emotional factors: Emotional issues such as stress, anxiety, or depression can impact sexual desire.

  • Hormonal imbalances: Imbalances in hormones such as testosterone and estrogen can affect libido.

  • Dosha imbalances: According to Ayurveda, imbalances in the doshas, or energies that govern various bodily functions, can also contribute to low libido. For example, an excess of the vata dosha, which is associated with movement, dryness and change, can lead to a decrease in sexual desire and even pain during sexual intercourse. This may cause a person to avoid sexual activity entirely.

There are also many potential psychological reasons that a person may experience low libido, or a decreased interest in sexual activity. Some common psychological factors that can contribute to low libido include:

  • Stress: Chronic stress or acute stress can interfere with sexual desire and function.

  • Depression: Depression can cause a lack of interest in activities, including sexual activity.

  • Anxiety: Anxiety can interfere with a person's ability to relax and enjoy sexual activity.

  • Relationship problems: Difficulties in a relationship, such as conflicts or a lack of communication, can lead to a decreased interest in sexual activity.

  • Past sexual trauma: A history of sexual trauma can affect a person's ability to enjoy sexual activity.

  • Poor body image: A negative body image can lead to a lack of confidence and a decrease in sexual desire.

It's important to note that these are just a few potential causes of low libido and that the specific cause can vary from person to person.

How does Ayurveda work on treating low libido?

There are several Ayurvedic treatments that may be recommended for low libido, depending on the individual's specific circumstances and the underlying cause of their decreased interest in sexual activity. Some examples of Ayurvedic treatments that may be recommended for low libido include:

  • Herbal remedies: Certain herbs are believed to have aphrodisiac properties and may be used to help improve libido by improving the quality of Shukra Dhatu (Reproductive fluid).

  • Diet and lifestyle changes: Making changes to your diet and lifestyle, such as eating more nourishing foods and getting regular exercise, may help improve overall health and increase libido.

  • Massage: Massage with warm oils, such as sesame or coconut oil, may help improve circulation and increase feelings of relaxation and well-being.

  • Yogic practices: Certain yoga poses, such as the cobra pose, may help improve circulation and stimulate the reproductive system.

There are several herbs and supplements that may be helpful for shukra kshaya, or low libido. Some examples include:

  • Ashwagandha: Ashwagandha is an herb that is believed to have adaptogenic properties and may help to improve overall health and increase libido.

  • Shatavari: Shatavari is an herb that is believed to have nourishing and tonifying properties and may be helpful for increasing libido and improving overall reproductive health.

  • Tribulus terrestris: Tribulus terrestris is an herb that is believed to have aphrodisiac properties and may help to improve libido.

  • Mucuna pruriens: Mucuna pruriens is an herb that is believed to have aphrodisiac properties and may help to improve sexual desire and performance.

While low libido may present itself as a physical health condition, there are also other factors that can influence a person's desire for sexual activity. These influences are often seen in one's horoscope (kundali).

In Vedic astrology, the planet Mars is often associated with sexuality and sexual desire. Mars is known as the planet of action, aggression, and energy, and it is believed to govern certain aspects of our physical and emotional lives, including our desires and passions.

In addition to Mars, the planet Venus is also associated with sexuality and relationships in Vedic astrology. Venus is known as the planet of love, beauty, and pleasure, and it is believed to govern our emotional and physical connections with others.

When either of these planets are afflicted in a person's horoscope, we can see fluctuations in their sexual desires or activity.

It's important to note that while these planets may be associated with sexuality and desire in Vedic astrology, it is not believed that they have the power to directly influence an individual's libido or sexual behavior. Rather, they are thought to symbolize certain energies and characteristics that may be reflected in a person's life.

The planet Saturn, considered to be a 'dry' planet, is sometimes associated with a lack of sexual desire or disinterest in sexual activity. Saturn is known as the planet of discipline, responsibility, and structure, and it is believed to govern certain aspects of our lives, including our ability to control our desires and passions.

The South Node of the Moon, Ketu is also linked with abstinence and a desire to follow a spiritual path. Depending on the placement of Ketu in one's horoscope, a person may have disinterest in physical intimacy, romance or relationships.

It is important to analyze all the potential reasons for low libido, both from an Ayurvedic standpoint and through Vedic astrology, before planning proper treatment. This is because low libido can have many potential causes, including physical, emotional, and psychological factors. By considering all of these factors, it is possible to identify the root cause of the issue and develop a treatment plan that is tailored to the individual's specific needs and circumstances.

In Ayurveda, low libido is often thought to be caused by an imbalance of the doshas, or energies that govern various bodily functions. By considering the individual's specific dosha imbalances and the underlying causes of these imbalances, it is possible to recommend appropriate treatments, such as herbal remedies, diet and lifestyle changes, or massage, that can help to restore balance and improve overall health and well-being.

In Vedic astrology, the positions of celestial bodies are believed to symbolize certain energies and characteristics that may be reflected in a person's life. By considering the positions of planets such as Mars and Saturn, which are associated with sexuality and desire, it may be possible to gain insight into potential psychological or emotional factors that may be contributing to low libido.

Overall, it is important to consider all potential causes of low libido in order to develop a comprehensive and effective treatment plan. By doing so, it is possible to address the root cause of the issue and improve overall health and well-being.
