Granulocytes, such as neutrophils and eosinophils, are responsible for engulfing and destroying pathogens. Agranulocytes, such as lymphocytes and monocytes, are responsible for recognizing and responding to specific pathogens.

Antibodies, or immunoglobulins, are proteins that are produced by the immune system to specifically recognize and neutralize pathogens. There are five main types of antibodies: IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG, and IgM.

The immune system also includes several organs and structures that play important roles in the body's defense mechanisms. These include the thymus, spleen, lymph nodes, and bone marrow. The thymus, located in the chest, is responsible for the development and maturation of T-lymphocytes, which are a type of white blood cell that plays a critical role in the immune response.

 

The spleen is an organ located in the upper left abdomen that filters the blood and helps to remove damaged or abnormal cells. Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped structures that are located throughout the body, particularly in the neck, armpits, and groin. They filter the lymphatic fluid and help to identify and fight off pathogens. The bone marrow is the soft, spongy tissue inside the bones where blood cells are produced.

The immune system also relies on a process called inflammation to help fight off pathogens and promote healing. Inflammation is the body's natural response to injury or infection, and is characterized by redness, warmth, swelling, and pain.

The immune system also has a process called Immunological memory, this process helps the body remember previous encounters with pathogens, allowing for a more rapid and effective response to future infections.
